The theme Translucency was specifically conceived for the transparent/ translucent work by Shiro Kuramata. He being the seminal designer, who blurred the boundaries between product design and sculpture, during which time he blazed a path and opened vistas for generations of artists and designers to follow. His light pieces are a result of his collaborations with Dan Flavin, Donald Judd and Tado Ando.

The concept of using furniture as a departure point to explore "fine art concepts" has become very much a part of contemporary art over the last ten years. Tested by fact that included in this exhibition is furniture works by artists like Wentworth, Lucas, Opie and Whiteread. The artists are exploring the medium in their own vocabulary, the testament is evidence that we are witnessing the enhancement of everyday objects.

On the one hand we have the design community post Bauhaus where the dictum is form follows function, the reaction to this being that designers have empowered a sense of curiosity, furthered by exploration to arrive at a non-conformist solution.

On the other hand, seemingly allied to this we witness the fine art community exploring everyday objects and imbuing them with meaning beyond their intrinsic values.

To further complement this question of what constitutes art perse will be a group of anonymously made objects from far flung cultures as diverse as ancient Peru to the tribal cultures of Polonaisia and Africa brought together cohesively by the early photographs of the Nancy Cunard's collection by Man Ray.

The exhibition is not intended to answer the undefinable or to post frontiers that by their nature prove temporary. Its goal rather is to stimulate the questioning process to refine our sense of perception and digest meaning from our everyday encounters, as we believe artists from all epochs intended.

Translucency is Paul Hughes Fine Arts first group show to inaugration a series of solo exhibitions which will take place in the new year. Up and coming shows include: Marc Newson, Shira Kuramata, Mathias and Sara Bengtsson.
